Franklin and his wife Maria Esther farm two plots of land in La Coipa. The first, El Romerillo, was given to him by his parents in 2016 after he had spent the previous two years learning how to farm coffee from them. At the time he was the youngest coffee producer in his home town, but he continued to receive help from his family. His desire to improve led him to enter the Cup of Excellence for the first time in 2018. In his first year of competition he placed third, and in the next he placed 4th. You can ask any coffee producer who has entered one of these competitions: It is no small feat to place so highly two years in a row. His dream is to win, and hopefully the 2020 Cup of Excellence will still take place later this year.

This coffee comes from La Mandarina, a parcel on his El Romerillo farm. It’s composed of Bourbon, Caturra, and a variety he calls Marchel, after his father (Marcelino Chinguel). Marchel is a bit of a mystery as no one is really sure where it’s from. Genetic testing shows that it is very similar to a hybrid known as Costa Rica 95, but it doesn’t share the same flavour profile at all. At any rate, no matter the variety’s history, Franklin’s version of it is exceedingly delicious and we can’t wait to see what he has in store this coming year.
