A new farm, a new farmer, a new relationship. The coffee already tastes amazing and things can only get better from here.
Poul visited the Terra Bella coffee farm in Costa Rica's West Valley before it even had its name. Poul was sitting at Carlos Batalla's kitchen table when Carlos decided on the name, which means "beautiful (land) earth."
This is the first year the farm has produced enough coffee to sell, and we purchased the whole crop. Carlos is new to coffee farming. He ran a successful construction business in Coast Rica for several years and decided it was time for a new challenge. While he is new to coffee, he is taking a very sophisticated approach to his new passion. Carlos purchased the land four years ago and has worked with agronomists to study soil samples and meticulously plan out each lot on the farm. We've agreed to buy more of his coffee next year as we are confident the quality will continue to increase.
The coffee is 100% Villa Sarchi, growing in volcanic soil. The Terra Bella farm has an eastern exposure, so it receives plenty of morning sun. The coffee cherries are hand sorted before wet milling and then sun dried first on a concrete patio and then on raised African beds for about four days until a moisture content of 11% is reached.
In the cup, we're discovering delightful notes of cherry, honey and subtle lemon, bright acidity and a velvety smooth finish. We hope you'll consider trying out Carlos' new coffee for yourself. And if you do, please let us know what you think.
